The 2nd Annual Gulf-South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibition is hosted by the BECA Gallery in New Orleans, La, but is open to all merging 2-d and 3-d artists in the Gulf states of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida who do not already have representation in New Orleans.

The purpose of the annual ‘Gulf South Regional Contemporary Art Exhibition’ is to discover and highlight new emerging Gulf South contemporary artists, their current work and the ideas that are motivating their creative processes. The exhibition is juried by the gallery’s Co-Directors who are seeking the most engaging and innovative works to feature during this group exhibition.

We see a nascent trend toward bio-regionalism in art emerging here, and would welcome the inclusion of gulf-coastal Mexico in future exhibitions, in the same way that British Columbia is often included in events with northern California, Oregon and Washington. It becomes increasingly obvious that arbitrary political boundaries make little difference to birds, fish or artists.

Soufie » 31 July 2008 » In art-news » No Comments

Has the traditional Florida style of marketing to the great unwashed finally made its way to the heart of metropolitan sophistication? In art museums yet? As usual, Florida leads the way. Congratulations on catching up to our refined methodology, San Francisco! Can we interest you in some parrot wrangling to go with the temple to the Cult of Frida?

Which way to the alligators?

Bill Correira Paints ‘em And Hangs ‘em For A Loyal Clientele

Soufie » 30 July 2008 » In florida-artist » No Comments

Pinellas marine life artist Bill Correira has hung a 4 by 6 foot acrylic on canvas work depicting koi fish in a informal pond setting, much to the delight of his patron, who found Bill through his extensive network of satisfied collectors. “The painting adds richness and a relaxed tropical ambiance to my client’s already stylish Florida design,” says Bill. Though large, the painting by no means overwhelms the space alotted to it. “I am gratified by the respectful placement my client chose.”
Bill “Woo” Correira’s work is available through Southern Fields, where he is currently accepting commissions.

How do we know this? “We had to turn away vendors and people are already signing up for the next one,” said Tim Gallagher of Simply Put Artisan Gallery and Artwalk organizer. That’s a good sign. The Bradenton Herald has the story of the Cortez Artwalk’s first spin.

Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, The First (European) Florida Artist

Soufie » 29 July 2008 » In florida-artist » No Comments

Le Moyne was the expedition artist with Jean Ribault when they exlored the St Johns River on the coast of Florida and founded Ft Caroline in what is now Jacksonville in 1564. There is a new book concerning Le Moynes life and times, ‘Painter In a Savage Land‘ by Miles Harvey, reviewed by the LA Times.
Most of Le Moynes original work was destroyed in a raid by the rival Spanish colonizers, and much of it was reproduced in Europe from memory,

Thieves Ripping Art Off The Walls, And What To Do About It

Soufie » 25 July 2008 » In art-news » No Comments

Stolen art in the Tampa Bay area; we had no idea it was such a problem. Alex Pickett of Creative Loafing Tampa sketches out the situation and then proposes a partial solution.
We are reminded by these stories that we are more and more often asked to install security key picture-hanging hardware when we do large installations in Florida. For a mere two extra bucks a frame, enough security is afforded that the casual, opportunistic thief will be deterred. Oh, and the picture won’t bang around during earthquakes or whatever.

An Artwalk In The Little Village of Cortez!

Soufie » 24 July 2008 » In events » No Comments

We think the fishing village of Cortez, Manatee County, near Bradenton Beach is the most charming town on the Gulf Coast of Florida south of Cedar Key. The fact that there isn’t much to do there is part of the charm. A big part. From the Sarasota Herald Tribune we found out that Cortez is now staging its own Artwalk event on every fourth Friday of the month. What may set it apart from the bigger walks is its emphasis on the off-season.
