Our charity this year is Youth Arts Corps: The Youth Arts Corps is a youth development, arts education and job training program that uses the fine arts to help youth reach their potential. The Corps offers three after-school and summer arts education programs, provides arts activities at a number of residential, recreational and juvenile justice facilities in Pinellas, Hillsborough and Manatee counties, and offers training and technical assistance in youth arts program development and implementation. All arts workshops are taught by professional artists.

Al Black spent the 1960s and 1970s selling paintings by The Highwaymen, a group of Florida artists. Eventually, he started making his own canvases. Life was good. By the 1980s, however, the demand for Highwaymen creations was slowing, and by the late 1990s, Al Black found himself in jail.
While housed at the Central Florida Reception Center near Orlando, Black’s past as a Highwayman artist was discovered by the Warden, and Black was allowed the opportunity to paint murals throughout the CFRC.

Author Gary Monroe, best known for his books on the Highwaymen, has photographed Black’s murals, and is in the process of completing a book on the same subject. As Monroe says, Al Black’s prison murals allow a glimpse into another world, where a painting can offer “an artful prescription to alleviate what ails many desperate lives.”

Artist Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson is now represented by the Katherine Butler Gallery in Towles Court, Sarasota, Florida. A review of current works in the gallery has been published by Sarasota’s Pelican Press.

Weekend Update! Elizabeth has had a 5-page “how to” feature article  published in the current November/December issue of Cloth Paper Scissors magazine which details her collage process in a step-by-step format.
