Marsha Writes–
Dogs have featured in my recent paintings. Perhaps because my own best friend of almost sixteen years died at the end of November. Perhaps because I’ve been asked to paint portraits of women with their “sleeve dogs”, that is , little dogs who can travel in one’s purse….Capturing the personality of dogs is much like capturing the personality of people…Using line and gesture, color and form can bring verve to the painted subject, regardless of species.

The paintings shown here, though stylized, express the character of the models, both human and canine. In most cases these are painted from life, but in several examples, I worked entirely from photos emailed to me , which was challenging…but I was told that I “totally got” the character of the dog.

In honor of my beloved Boo, I painted the two figures with big dogs…he was a mix of German Shepard and Doberman…a splendid big dog.
